Dwayne Johnson Teases That He Might Be In A DC Comics Movie

by on May.18, 2012, under Stuff We Like

Yesterday, Dwayne Johnson (aka The Rock) tweeted this vague response, igniting rumors that Johnson is in talks or cast in an upcoming DC Comics movie adaptation. Many fans responded to The Rock’s tease, but got no response. So what might The Rock have up his sleeves? Could there be a Warner Bros/DC Comics movie in the works? Or is The Rock just trying to get his fans talking (sometimes a lot of nonsensical buzz can turn into reality).

I remember back in 2007 that Johnson was attached to play Black Adam in a big screen adaptation of the Captain Marvel comic book Shazam!. Somewhere along the line, that project fell off the board. Has the project been rekindled? Or more likely, is Johnson in talks for another DC Comics property? If so which one?

Photos: You Might Not Even Recognize Matthew Fox in ‘Alex Cross’

by on May.18, 2012, under Stuff We Like

Holy crap, look at Matthew Fox! The Lost star plays a serial killer in Alex Cross, the Rob Cohen-directed adaptation of James Patterson‘s novel I, Alex Cross. In the title role is Tyler Perry, in a rare gig outside of his own filmmaking oeuvre. He’s taking over for Morgan Freeman, who played Cross in Kiss the Girls and Along Came a Spider.

The first images from Alex Cross have shown up today, and while it’s neat to see Perry out of his Madea getup, it’s really Fox that steals the spotlight here. Because, at the risk of repeating myself, holy crap. He’s really Christian Bale-ing here. More images are below.

Alex Cross also stars Edward Burns, Jean Reno, Rachel Nichols and Giancarlo Esposito. Fox plays the prime nemesis to Cross in the film, and now I’m far more interested in checking out the results of their pairing.

Here’s the book description. Alex Cross opens on October 26th. [Kinopoisk via The Film Stage]

Can Alex Cross survive his most chilling – and personal – case ever? Pulled out of a family celebration, Detective Alex Cross gets awful news: A beloved relative has been found brutally murdered. Vowing to catch the killer, he quickly learns that she was mixed up in one of Washington, D.C.’s wildest scenes. And she was not this killer’s only victim . . .  The hunt for the murderer leads Alex and his girlfriend, Detective Brianna Stone, to a place where every fantasy is possible, if you have the credentials to get in. Soon they confront some very important, very protected, and very dangerous people who will do anything to keep their secrets safe. As Alex closes in on the killer, he discovers evidence that points to the unimaginable – a revelation that could rock the entire world.

As a bonus, we’ve got the trailer for Perry’s latest film, Tyler Perry’s Madea’s Witness Protection, which opens on June 29. And before you scoff, watch the trailer long enough to catch Madea telling Eugene Levy to get out of bed — that scary whisper is the scariest whisper. If the trailer doesn’t make all the details clear, the longest synopsis we’ve ever posted for a comedy is below the embed.

Tyler Perry returns as America’s favorite brash, no-holds-barred grandma in Lionsgate’s TYLER PERRY’S MADEA’S WITNESS PROTECTION, an outrageous culture clash comedy that also stars Eugene Levy, Denise Richards and Doris Roberts.

For years, George Needleman (Levy), the gentle CFO of a Wall Street investment bank, has been living with his head in the clouds. His frustrated second wife, Kate (Richards), has reached her limit taking care of his senile mother, Barbara (Roberts). His teenage daughter, Cindy (Danielle Campbell), is spoiled beyond hope and his seven-year-old son, Howie (Devan Leos), wishes his father were around more. But George is finally forced to wake up when he learns that his firm, Lockwise Industries, has been operating a mob-backed Ponzi scheme – and that he’s been set up as the fall guy.

Facing criminal charges and death threats from the mob, George and his entire family are put under witness protection in the safest place that Brian (Perry), a federal prosecutor from Atlanta, can think of…

His Aunt Madea’s house down South.

As a result, Madea and her live-in brother, Uncle Joe (Perry), find themselves managing a completely dysfunctional family from Connecticut. But as George tries to solve the mystery behind Lockwise’s finances, Madea whips the Needlemans into shape using her hilarious brand of tough love. And together, they realize they just might have what it takes to unite George’s family, outsmart the mob and change everyone’s lives for the better.

Featuring Perry’s trademark blend of raucous comedy and emotional uplift, TYLER PERRY’S MADEA’S WITNESS PROTECTION is written and directed by Perry, and produced by Perry, Ozzie Areu and Paul Hall. The film also stars Romeo Miller, Tom Arnold, John Amos and Marla Gibbs.

‘Game Of Thrones’ Preview: Behold ‘Blackwater’

by on May.18, 2012, under Stuff We Like

If you're a fan of "Game of Thrones," the photo you see below should make you very, very happy. Your mind isn't playing tricks on you: that is indeed Jerome Flynn as the sellsword Bronn, taking aim with a fire-tipped arrow at an unseen enemy with Blackwater Bay at his back. That's right: the Battle of Blackwater is on!

It's the first official photo from "Blackwater," the highly awaited episode of "Game of Thrones" season two that finally, finally, thrusts viewers into the thick of an all-out battle (as in on screen, no getting-knocked-out-and-skipping-the-fight trickery) between Joffrey's allies in King's Landing and the forces of Stannis Baratheon. "A Song of Ice and Fire" mastermind George R.R. Martin wrote the episode, only adding to the list of reasons why fans are losing their minds in anticipation of the hour.

Before we get to "Blackwater," we'll have to encounter "The Prince of Winterfell" in this Sunday night's episode — but whether we're talking about Prince Bran or "Prince" Theon is a matter of some debate. We'll certainly be tuning in either way. Here's a look at Tyrion and Varys from that episode.

Tell us what you think of the new "Game of Thrones" photos in the comments section and on Twitter!

Oliver Cooper Wants You To Help Make Him The ‘Best Onscreen Dirtbag’

by on May.18, 2012, under Stuff We Like

Oliver Cooper

Hooray for Movie Awards season and the cutthroat competition between this year's very deserving group of nominees! And although the majority of the nominations were snagged by some popular wizards, bridesmaids and tributes, there is plenty of Movie Awards love and Golden Popcorn to go around. Kinda.

Speaking of Movie Awards love, we have to give it up to first-time nominee Oliver Cooper for putting together this very clever campaign video and Facebook page.

"These are the nominees for Best Onscreen Dirtbag, but only one of them has a proven track record as a douchebag," the ad begins. "He's been called a crude, pushy creep, and 'the most annoying movie character since Jar Jar Binks.'"

MTV News recently caught up with the Best Onscreen Dirtbag nominee to discuss his creative campaign efforts.

"I'm stoked. I'm putting all my hours in the campaign to win this Dirtbag award," Cooper said. "My strategy is to talk to as many people as I can to win this thing. I'm traveling across the country," he joked. "We don't have much money right now, I'm taking Greyhound buses to different cities telling people why I should win."

The "Project X" star went on to say that he's going for strong word of mouth, as well as a few sympathy votes.

"We're going to put up more videos and hopefully catch a following, get people onboard, who liked the movie or hated me," he said. "There are probably more people that hated me."

"I'm trying to gain as much weight, let myself go as much as possible," he continued, speaking to how he's getting ready for his big night on June 3. "I want people to really think of me as disgusting. 'God that guy is despicable. How can he possibly be in movies?'"

Head over to MovieAwards.MTV.com to vote for your favorite flicks now! The 21st annual MTV Movie Awards air live Sunday, June 3, at 9 p.m. ET.

‘Hyde Park on Hudson’ Trailer: Bill Murray Gets Delightfully Presidential

by on May.18, 2012, under Stuff We Like

I have no idea whether or not Hyde Park on Hudson actually conforms to any factual truth, but seeing Bill Murray romp, in stately fashion, as President Franklin Delano Roosevelt could prove to be quite a joy.

The first trailer for the film, which was directed  by Roger Michell (Morning Glory, Notting Hill), introduces Murray’s take on FDR, as the President hosts the King and Queen of England (Samuel West and Olivia Colman) at a retreat in upstate New York prior to the outbreak of World War II. There is a minor clash of cultures as the royals meet FDR and his staff, but also a bit of potential scandal as the President attends to Daisy (Laura Linney) rather than his wife Eleanor (Olivia Williams).

Above all, however, is Murray and his warmth and charm as FDR. Check out the trailer below.

Richard Nelson scripted Hyde Park on Hudson based on his own play, based in turn on the 1939 visit by King George VI and Queen Elizabeth to America — the royal couple’s first appearance on these shores. As we see in the trailer, the in itial culture clash gave way to a growing friendship between the leaders, and relations between the US and England were greatly strengthened. And at the time, the play says, FDR and his distant cousin Margaret Stuckley (aka Daisy) were in the midst of an illicit affair.
I can accept the deviations from history that are inevitable in a film of this sort, especially when the charm of this cast is taken into consideration. If nothing else, this might nudge you to queue up Rushmore, as it reunites Murray and Olivia Williams, and even offers up a shot of Murray in a swimming pool.

Yahoo has the trailer. Hyde Park on Hudson opens on December 7.

In June 1939, President Franklin Delano Roosevelt and his wife Eleanor host the King and Queen of England for a weekend at the Roosevelt home at Hyde Park on Hudson, in upstate New York — the first-ever visit of a reigning English monarch to America. With Britain facing imminent war with Germany, the Royals are desperately looking to FDR for support. But international affairs must be juggled with the complexities of FDR’s domestic establishment, as wife, mother, and mistresses all conspire to make the royal weekend an unforgettable one.
