Joe Barber Reviews “Dan In Real Life”

Steve Carell has his fans. The success of “The 40 Year Old Virgin” at the movies and the American version of “The Office” on NBC television attest to that fact. While I’ve been occassionally amused by both productions, I was more impressed by Carell’s work as the gay professor attempting to recover from his suicide attempt in “Little Miss Sunshine.” There was a freshness and depth to his work there that stayed with me longer than the simplistic giggles of the earlier film and the TV show. Carell has just returned to the big screen with “Dan In Real Life” and, despite some kinks in the script, his performance shines through with sincerity. (more…)

The struggle to find one’s own path and separate from the seeming truths you grew up with is the journey at the heart of Sean Penn’s beautiful and harrowing new film, “Into The Wild.” Based on the best selling book by John Krakauer that told the true story of Christopher McCandless. Centered by a superb performance by relative newcomer Emile Hirsch as Chris, this is a beautiful looking and deeply moving tale that celebrates and explores the joys and dangers of the freedom offered by the open road.
