MINI MOVIE REVIEW: “YOU, ME & DUPREE”
“You, Me and Dupree” strands some very god actors in a very bad plot. Owen Wilson is Randy Dupree, a lazy slacker who makes Peter Pan look like a poster boy for maturity. When he finds himself without a place to stay or a job, he calls old buddy Carl (Kevin Dillon) whose recently married his girlfriend Molly (Kate Hudson,) the daughter of a wealthy real estate magnate (Michael Douglas.) Carl’s under the gun, since his new father-in-law’s just handed him an important new job with his company, He’s also given the newlyweds a brand new dream home-a home into which Carl invites Dupree temporarily, until he can get on his feet. Unfortunately, where Dupree goes, chaos follows.

MINI MOVIE REVIEW: “LITTLE MAN”
“Little Man,” directed by Keenan Ivory Wayans, tells the story of an upwardly mobile African American couple (Shawn Wayans and Kerry Washington.) Wayans wants to start their family, but Washington’s too job oriented to take a maternity break. One morning, they find a baby in a basket on their doorstep and take it in until they can call Child Services. What they don’t know is that the baby is actually a 40 year old career criminal (Marlon Wayans) who’s very short. He’s pretending to be a baby to get back a stolen diamond he hid a few days earlier in Washington’s purse.

The concept of marketing (at least as I understand it) is that you are supposed to promote your good or service in such a way that you will encourage people to purchase or patronize. In the world of movies, advertising will often allude to other beloved films of the past involving one or more of the current participants. Others make a terrific coming attraction trailer using the best bits of the movie to entice potential audiences.

The OH in Ohio
Directed by Billy Kent
Entering select salons 8/4/2006 (reviewed on DVD)
I made special note above of the circumstances of reviewing the art house farce The OH in Ohio because I have long worried that the home viewing of a movie yields a mediocre experience. The great is only pretty good, the good so-so, and the bad nothing special. Like a lumpy old mattress everything tends to fall towards the middle with blunted highs and lows. One reason that I distrust the two stars given above is that I do not recall laughing aloud during this supposed comedy (or, at least, what I was told was a comedy-I only have the filmmakers and their publicists word that this flick should eventually be shelved in the comedy section at Borders).

JOE’S MOVIE REVIEW: “PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: DEAD MAN’S CHEST”
Johnny Depp can overwhelm just about anything in the movies, including a director who falls in love with every foot of film he shoots. So much so that Gore Verbinski nearly snatches victory from the jaws of defeat in his “Pirates of The Caribbean” films. Happily, Depp’s Captain Jack Sparrow is such a loveable rogue that he makes the first of two “Pirates” sequels, “Dead Man’s Chest,” the most entertaining big budget blockbuster of the summer.
